YEADON residents have been getting their first look at a flagship new extra-care development for the elderly.

Scaffolding has just come down from the under-construction Wharfedale View, the first scheme of its kind to be built by Leeds City Council.

The 45 apartment project is intended to allow older residents, who can rent or share ownership, to retain their independence while receiving the care they need.

Work on the building, part of the local authority's council house growth programme, started a year ago and is due to be finished in three months.

Its exterior is clad in locally sourced stone and the development as a whole conforms to the Leeds Standard, the council's set of criteria to ensure high standards in areas like space, heating, ventilation and green space.

With the main exterior now complete, contractor Henry Boot Construction will turn to fitting out the interior.

Leeds City Council's Executive member for Health, Wellbeing and Adults, Rebecca Charlwood, said: "We all want to be able to live safely and independently as we get older.

"Wharfedale View will give people reassurance that help is on hand if they need or want it.

"Giving people that choice and control over their own care and support needs is really important, and it’s fantastic that we’ll be able to do so in an environment that is so impressive, welcoming and modern."

Executive member for Communities, Councillor Debra Coupar, added: "Purpose built, accessible accommodation for our older generation doesn’t just meet the needs of the individuals that live there; it potentially frees up much needed council homes for other families.

"The finishing line is in sight at Wharfedale View and we’re really looking forward to welcoming people to their new homes."

If the remaining work goes to schedule the building will be ready to accept its first residents later this year.

Henry Boot Construction's Operations Director Tony Shaw said: "We are proud to have been involved in such a flagship project, working closely with a great team from Leeds City Council.

"Things are really moving on site now as we progress towards completion.

"It is an impressive building in a fantastic location and we look forward to welcoming new occupants into their new homes before the end of the year."

The accommodation will consist of 18, one bedroom and 27, two bedroom homes with residents' health and care needs being provided by Roche Healthcare Ltd.

The facilities will also include a restaurant and hair salon.
