STAFF and students at Ilkley Grammar School are celebrating further success at GCSE, following on from some great A level results last week.

Eighty per cent of students have achieved five A*– C (including English and maths).

IGS has once again built on the achievements of the last few years, with results across all disciplines performing well above national averages for both raw attainment (actual grades achieved) and value added scores (where students’ prior ability is taken into account when comparing results to national outcomes), with many individual subjects further improving on their performance of last year.

Despite overall grades dropping at a national level, including top grades dropping for the fifth consecutive year, IGS has improved on last year’s GCSE results and has further increased its positive gap with national results. Thirty-nine per cent of all grades achieved at IGS were awarded A*-A (19 per cent above national), with two thirds being awarded A*- B (24 per cent above national) and 85 per cent overall at A*-C (19 per cent above national). In total, 15 subjects improved their A*-A performance this year, with 16 improving their overall A*- C, which will mean similar expected improvements in value added results, building on the improving trend of recent years.

Headteacher Helen Williams said: “This summer’s GCSE results have shown the huge range of success that students achieve at Ilkley Grammar School.

"Not only have our raw results improved and outperformed national averages again, but more importantly, value added scores are also set to be well above national and continue on an upward trajectory. These achievements, alongside our A Level results last week, show that IGS students, regardless of their starting points, meet the high expectations placed on them and achieve great levels of success.”

She added: “When Ofsted visit us later this year, we will be in a very strong position to secure another favourable outcome, which will hopefully give full recognition of the outstanding and tireless work that both staff and students have consistently put in year on year since our last inspection.”

Top GCSE performer at the school was Harriet Day with 10A*s, followed by Isla Lury with 9A*s and 1A, Melissa Johns-Watson with 9 A*s and one A and Katrin Blears and Annie Edwards, each with 9A*s.
