BISHOP of Bradford the Rt Rev Toby Howarth stepped back in time to the 1970s as children at Burley and Woodhead CE Primary celebrated the school’s 40th birthday.

Pupils wore flared jeans, shades and crazy tank-tops for the day, while Bishop Toby opted for more traditional clerical garb.

The school opened on the present site in 1976 when Jim Callaghan was Prime Minister, Southampton won the FA Cup, Brotherhood of Man won the Eurovision Song Contest and a pint of beer cost a shocking 32p!

The Church of England school now has 220 pupils, and has emerged as one of the most successful and popular in Bradford district.

The bishop cut a special birthday cake and joined in an afternoon of traditional games and 70s disco.

Headteacher, Joanne Siddall, said: “It was a fantastic day for the children and a great opportunity to talk to about how their country and community has changed during the 40 years.

"The children are proud of their school and were thrilled to have the bishop pop along as a special party guest.”
