DAN Cruickshank will be sharing his historical expertise with an audience at Otley Courthouse next month.

The historian and TV presenter will discuss A History of Architecture in 100 Buildings when he speaks on June 17.

The sites featured include some in inaccessible or under-threat locations, such as Palmyra in Syria, which Dan is warning may end up being lost to the world.

The historian journeys through time and place during the talk, moving from the ancient Egyptian pyramids to the soaring skyscrapers of Manhattan.

His selection includes many of the world’s best known buildings such as the Pantheon in Rome, Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, the Taj Mahal in Agra, along with less obvious structures – like the Oriel Chambers in Liverpool.

Known for his many television series, including Around the World in 80 Treasures and Dan Cruickshank's Adventures in Architecture, his Otley appearance will be a rare chance for local fans to see the acclaimed presenter.

The presentation begins at 7.30pm and tickets cost £15.

The following night, on June 18, Otley’s own Kieran Hodgson will be bringing his smash-hit Edinburgh Festival Fringe comedy show, the Tour de France-inspired Lance, to his hometown.

In 2003 Lance Armstrong won his fifth Tour de France title and Kieran, as a young boy in West Yorkshire, believed in him.

Lance traces Kieran's teenage love of cycling via Armstrong’s disgrace all the way to Yorkshire’s very own Tour de France in 2014, and arrives at the Courthouse just in time for the local cycling spirit to peak again, falling as it does

between the second Tour de Yorkshire and the 2016 Tour de France.

A rising star on the current comedy circuit, Kieran has begun to make a name for himself on TV having had roles in BBC2’s Count Arthur Strong and the movie Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.

Most recently, he played the role of Ian Lavender in the BBC Two drama We’re Doomed! The Dad’s Army Story, alongside John Sessions, Kevin Bishop and Sally Phillips.

Having amassed a host of four and five star reviews from the likes of the Guardian, the Times and the Telegraph, Lance was nominated for Best Show at the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2015.

Its London run at Soho Theatre totally sold out earlier this month, and has already been extended for a third time due to popular demand.

A Courthouse spokesman said: "Don’t miss the chance to catch this local hero on home turf this month."

The show starts at 8pm and tickets cost £10.
