AN ILKLEY schoolboy has been accepted into the choir of Bradford Cathedral.

Ten-year-old Thomas Dennill, who attends Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and Church in Ilkley, became a full chorister on May 8.

His talent for singing was spotted initially by Leeds Catholic Diocese music scheme and, more recently, by his singing teacher, Una Barry, of Ilkley.

Una said: "After one lesson, I could see there was true natural potential there, as well as a composure I liked, and so the best thing to do was to find him somewhere where both that talent and Thomas as a little boy would be nurtured, not just musically, but spiritually as well.

"With that in mind, the choir of Bradford Cathedral, directed by Alex Woodrow, was the obvious place to go if they would have him, and where there are so many different opportunities to be with like-minded musical boys and girls from many different schools from that wonderful multi-cultural city, not to mention the like-minded adults to lead by example.

"A big commitment, of course, trekking over there four times a week with his parents, Jayne and Garth, acting as the willing chauffeurs. But so far it has all been worth it and Thomas is greatly valued.

"I just hope Fr Kieran Heskin from the Sacred Heart parish doesn’t feel we have all stolen one of his willing altar servers as a result!

"Then, if that weren’t enough, thanks to the kind family in Ilkley wanting a new home for their disused piano. Thomas acquired this piano for his tenth birthday, and has just begun studying with Margaret Raymond in Ben Rhydding. So, all the best, Thomas, for a wonderful music life ahead!"
