A RETIREMENT housing developer’s appeal against Bradford Council’s refusal of planning permission for 24 apartments in the grounds of Ilkley's Craiglands Hotel will be heard at Ilkley Town Hall on Wednesday (May 4).

McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd, which is also behind plans for 100 retirement homes and a care home on the Tesco new store land off Railway Road, appealed to the planning inspectorate over the Council’s decision in December.

The planning application, submitted to the authority last April, was the latest in a series of plans involving development of the grounds of the Victorian hydro, also including the development of a spa in the hotel basement.

Council officers ruled that the proposed apartment block would be a “large and intrusive intervention” into the setting of the hotel, which stands close to the slopes of Ilkley Moor.

The appellant is contesting the decision on a technical issue over ecology, and is expected to present heritage and ecology consultants at the hearing to address the reasons for the plan’s refusal.

The hearing will begin at 10am.
