LEEDS Trinity University has donated £250 towards the Horsforth Cenotaph project to remember 46 local men who lost their lives in the First World War.

The town's cenotaph was put in place in 1922, with plaques containing the names of 211 men and one woman who died during the war. But a Lottery project in 2014 found a further 46 names that had been missed off the memorial.

Now, thanks to fundraising efforts from the Horsforth WWI 100 Years group, which has raised £3,250 for the project, two plaques will be added to the cenotaph, bearing the names of the men who had been overlooked.

Susan Watson, from the group, said: "We have done a huge amount of work at Horsforth Museum to ensure the remaining 46 men will be commemorated at the Horsforth Cenotaph, and we are delighted to receive the contribution from Leeds Trinity University.

"This isn’t the first time we’ve worked together, and we hope it won’t be the last."

Leeds Trinity University chief operating officer, Howard Nelson, said: "We are always pleased to support our local community and it is an honour to contribute to the Horsforth Cenotaph project.

"A number of our students have taken part in work placements at Horsforth Museum, including projects around the First World War and the impact it had locally in Horsforth."

Horsforth Museum is now looking to find any living relatives of the men who will be listed on the new plaques, ahead of the unveiling at the end of the year. The family names are: Atkinson, Bateson, Bell, Bickerdike, Booth, Brown, Carter, Cheatter, Claughton, Commons, Cory, Fieldhouse, France, Gaunt, Gott, Greaves, Haley, Hamer, Hanson, Harland, Harrison, Helston, Hemsley, Hicks, Hunt, Johnson, Jowett, Kaye, Lister, Mence, Midgley, Parkin, Petty, Pickard, Powell, Rawson, Ridley, Roo, Tuke, Taylor, Weatherhead, Whittleston and Wood.
