A FAMILY'S gratitude to the NHS is being marked with the sale of fundraising loveheart badges.

Derek Marshall came up with the idea of 'Love the NHS' emblems to thank the service for caring for his wife, Betty, who had dementia and suffered from a catastrophic stroke.

But he died before he could see his idea come to fruition.

Now, the badges are being launched in his memory by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

They will go on sale at Leeds General Infirmary for a donation of £1, with proceeds going towards NHS causes.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation fundraising development manager, Sharon Evans, said: "Derek approached us at the start of the year with the 'Love the NHS' badge concept.

"Having seen the great work NHS carers provide daily for his wheelchair-bound wife, Derek wanted to be able to show his appreciation for the NHS and give something back.

"During the past few months, we have been developing and designing these wonderful charity badges closely with Derek. Sadly, before we had chance to launch them, Derek passed away, so we would like to dedicate them to his memory.

"Every single badge bought will make a huge difference to patients across Yorkshire and transform many lives within our communities. We hope to see the badges worn all across Yorkshire before hopefully spreading across the UK."

After putting his idea forward Derek, from Leeds, told the Foundation: "There are no words that can express the gratitude we feel towards the NHS for the care we receive.

"If you or a loved one has ever been rushed into hospital in an emergency, you will know you will receive immediate lifesaving attention – it is the best in the world."

Derek's son Andrew, who lives in Guiseley, said: "We are hoping it is going to be a great success, providing much-needed funds to support local causes.

"The badges also spread the message of all the great work the staff of the NHS do on a daily basis. At some stage in everyone's lifetime, they need care. It is possibly only then that we realise how lucky we all are to have the NHS."

Badges are available at the charity stand at Leeds General Infirmary for a £1 donation. Five or more badges can be ordered via Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust on 0113 2064540.
