OTLEY students have created 50 flags to help the town welcome the Tour de Yorkshire.

Otley BID (Business Improvement District) teamed up with fifth and sixth form pupils at Prince Henry's Grammar School on the project.

Their work, featuring designs depicting images of Otley in yellow and black, was overseen by head of art and design, Shane Green, and can now be seen around the town centre.

BID manager, Peter Mudge, said: "We were blown away by the designs, so much so that all 50 were commissioned and printed.

"We have also included each student’s first name on their own flag so they can feel proud of what they have achieved.

"The project is a great example of young people getting involved and taking pride in their home town and what it has to offer."

Mr Green said: "The art faculty has thoroughly enjoyed working on this project with Otley BID, and it has been of great value to our students, seeing their own work exhibited in public.

"Seeing the range of individual interpretations of the design brief has been beneficial to their creative process, and having their names up in silk in their own town has been wonderful."

Year 12 student, Alice Waites, added: "We learnt new technical skills throughout the initial design and development process to ensure the flags all looked consistent when displayed together, which proved really interesting.

"It was certainly a very inspiring project and it’s great to now see our work on show for everyone to see."

The flags are on display in the Market Square and in Market Street, New Market and Bondgate, where they will be seen by some of the world's top cyclists on Saturday and TV viewers around the world.
