OTLEY'S MP has asked the Government to see what more can be done to develop women's sport.

Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) raised the issued in Parliament days before the town hosts two start stages – including the women's race – for the Tour de Yorkshire.

Addressing ministers in the Commons, Mr Mulholland pointed out Saturday's event will be setting an example for how to achieve equality in sport.

He said: "There is huge excitement in Yorkshire that local hero and World Champion Lizzie Armitstead is lining up in the women’s Tour de Yorkshire on Saturday.

"Just as significantly, it will be the most lucrative women’s cycling race in the calendar, and the whole event will be televised.

"May we have a debate on how we can do more to support women’s sport, to give it parity of coverage and financial reward with men’s sport?"

This year's women's race follows the same 136km route as the men's and has £50,000 of prize money, making it the most lucrative women's cycle race in the world.

Speaking after the debate, Mr Mulholland added: "Otley local Lizzie Armitstead is a real role model for people here and beyond.

"That the Tour de Yorkshire women’s race is the world’s most lucrative cycling race for women is a sign of how far women’s sport has come, and Lizzie taking part is a real boost.

"Of course, there is more we can do to develop women’s sport, and I hope ministers will build upon the excellent work already happening in this area."
