A SPRING clean in Yeadon has left roadside verges looking pristine after 15 bags of litter were collected in two hours.

Aireborough Civic Society is thanking everyone who took part in the litter pick near Yeadon Cemetery on Sunday.

Society chairman Clive Woods said: "We managed to collect 15 bags of litter in 2 hours between the cemetery entrance and Warren House Lane. We cleared the same area this time last year. We also know that Cleansing had cleared the area a few months ago.

"The most common items were: McDonald's drinks cartons, beer and lager cans, glass wine and spirit bottles, plastic water bottles, Lucozade bottles, crisp packets, take away coffee cups and chocolate wrappers. Given the location it is clear that nearly all the litter, except at the airport viewing area, is simply thrown out of moving car windows. Enforcement for this sort of offence is clearly non existent."

A second litter pick was due to take place this week, with volunteers asked to meet at 10am on Wednesday, April 27 opposite the entrance to Yeadon Westfield Junior School. Anyone wanting to take part was asked to bring gloves.

Last year volunteers collected 40 large bin bags of rubbish, which had been strewn between Yeadon Cemetery and the road leading to the airport. The path along the former branch railway line in Yeadon was also given a spring clean.
