A JUNIOR table tennis ace from Bramhope has added another trophy to his collection... without even having to lift a bat.

Shayan Siraj, a year ten student at The Grammar School in Leeds, was named Best at Sport at the British Muslim Awards 2016.

He was the youngest award winner out of the 22 categories at the awards ceremony in Birmingham.

Now in its fourth year, the British Muslim Awards are presented by Al Rayan Bank to recognise achievements in business, charity, sport, arts and culture.

Shayan was accompanied to the awards by his proud father, Waseem Bashir, who said: "The evening was one of celebration, reflecting the significant role British Muslims have in society.

"It was wonderful to meet so many people who have been high achievers in their areas of expertise, and see Shayan among them with this accolade."

Shayan has been playing table tennis since the age of seven and began representing Yorkshire while still at junior school. Aged 12, he made his debut representing England in an international competition. Shayan became a national champion twice in one day last year, taking both the singles and doubles titles at the Table Tennis England under-11 to under-14 national championships.

Shayan has also helped the Yorkshire cadet team retain the UK National County Table Tennis Championship for the third year running.
