A COMMUNITY concert is to be held at St Oswald’s Church in Guiseley to raise money for repairs to its tower.

Raise the Roof, on February 21, will feature two community choirs – Vocal Assembly and Little Warblers – along with local rock band The Elephant Trees.

The concert is under the direction of Jacob Phillips, of JP Productions, a not-for-profit community organisation that aims to encourage people to engage in the arts.

Vocal Assembly is an all-age, all-ability community choir, which started in 2014 and now has 70 members who meet at Guiseley Baptist Church on Monday evenings. They sing music of all types under the leadership of Anya Faull, a music teacher at Guiseley School.

The Little Warblers group started in November 2015 for children aged from five to 11.

Lauren Elliott, musical director of the group, said she is delighted the junior choir is already 20 strong.

"They give every little bit of their souls to their singing," she said.

Local alternative rock band The Elephant Trees will also be making an appearance. Formed in 2015, they won a school music competition, Battle of the Acts, and recorded a mini EP which was released in October 2015. Sam Hugh-Jones, Will Milton, Tom Palmer and Martha Phillips were at Guiseley School together and decided to acknowledge their roots by naming their band after the trees which are a well-know Guiseley landmark.

Saint Oswald’s Rector, David Pickett said: "We need to raise the huge sum of £82,000 for our Tower Fund, and have made some fantastic progress with donations so far. I was so pleased when Jacob suggested this concert as it’s great to see the space in the Church used for special events and to welcome in the local community for something a bit different."

Raise the Roof starts at 6.30pm at St Oswald’s Church in The Green, Guiseley. Entry is free and donations to the Tower Fund are welcome.
