REPRESENTATIVES of community organisations and residents will meet later this month to discuss plans for a town association that could save Ilkley's visitor information centre.

More than 20 individuals, including representatives of groups within Ilkley, are expected to take part in discussion on February 22, as efforts continue to safeguard the future of key public buildings in the town.

The meeting follows recent fact-finding trips to Hebden Bridge, where a community association took over and redeveloped the town hall for business and community use.

As Bradford Council cutbacks continue – including plans now to close Ilkley Visitor Information Centre next year – key figures in the town are looking into the possibility of taking over or securing the future of buildings, such as Ilkley Town Hall.

Those involved have now formulated ideas for future uses of the landmark building.

Ward councillor, Anne Hawkesworth, believes a town association to protect Ilkley public buildings is a distinct possibility.

"Such an association can ensure retention of our visitor information centre," she said. "The town hall can provide the venue for a shop window for small businesses within the town, through providing glass cases for short-term rental."

Other ideas for using the building include a display area for an Ilkley museum collection, a retail area for an antiques or retro goods centre, lecture theatre and gallery, and office space for rental.

Cllr Hawkesworrth added: "We just have to make it happen.

"It can be the hub and motor for Ilkley's future community and economic drive.

"Obviously, this building isn't the only one of interest to the attendees, but there is no doubt the civic buildings do have a wonderful position. It is the town, and indeed the valley, which can make the future brighter for Ilkley's wonderful assets now under threat."
