PRE-SCHOOL and primary school children have been learning about healthy eating on a visit to Tesco in Ilkley.
Pupils from Burley Oaks Primary School and Ilkley Pre-School Playgroup took park in a Farm to Fork trail as part of Tesco's Eat Happy Project, and enjoyed the opportunity to taste and experience different types of food.
The Tesco Eat Happy Project is a commitment to improving children's relationship with food and strengthening healthy eating habits within the early stages of childhood.
As part of the project the children toured the store in Springs Lane and watched fresh fish being filleted and learned where all the different types of fresh fruit and vegetables come from by taking part in a mini treasure hunt.
They even experienced the freezing temperatures of the store's chillers and freezers and loved looking in the secret places behinds the Staff Access Only doors.
The children from Ilkley Pre-School Playgroup were the youngest participants in the initiative and Ilkley Pre-school’s manager, Tracy Fearnley, said: “We work hard to stress the importance of healthy eating to our children, often growing fruit and vegetables in our own garden and eating them as a part of our snack time. It is a great opportunity to share this important lesson with other parts of the community and we would like to thank Tesco for inviting us to their store."
