FOR most people a run from Otley to Cambridge would be a challenge enough in itself.

For Otley Athletic Club member Gilly Wight, however, that 182 mile feat will only be 'stage one' of a double fundraising feat this month.

Gilly is setting off for Cambridge on Sunday, February 21 and aims to arrive there on Saturday, February 27 - only to take part in the Cambridge Half Marathon the very next day.

If she finishes the race successfully, it means the 31 year old will have clocked up more than 195 miles in a week.

Gilly, who trains with her dog Max (racing name Maximus), is hoping her efforts will deliver a big fundraising boost for children's cancer charity The Candlelighters Trust.

She said: "I'm trying to raise as much money as possible for Candlelighters.

"I have been involved with the charity on and off since I was around eight years old, when a friend's brother passed away from bone marrow cancer as a child.

"Candlelighters did a lot to support the family through the whole experience, so from then on have supported them where I can."

"I will be running parts of the route with my trusted four legged friend, Maximus, and will be burning about 4,000 calories per day."

Gilly, an Otley Athletic Club member since 2006, will follow a route that takes in Royston, Worksop, Newark on Trent, Thistleton, Elton and Huntingdon.

She will start off averaging about 30 miles a day, with the daily distance scaling down slightly scaled as she approaches Cambridge to make sure she has something in reserve for the 13.2 mile half marathon.

Gilly's progress can be followed on her Facebook page, and people can support her fundraising for Candlelighters at justgiving.com/G-WIGHT/ - where she has already collected £595.
