UNWANTED Victorian lampposts could make their way from Harrogate to Ilkley's Mill Ghyll as efforts go on to find a replacement for damaged illuminations.

Bradford Council is now said to have accepted responsibility for cutting through cables to the lights when pruning bushes in the wooded strip of parkland, which lies between Wells Walk and Wells Promenade.

And decorative lights in the stream have since been damaged during the recent flooding, which swelled the water course.

The lighting had been funded with £9,000 from Ilkley's three ward councillors, but it was later revealed no formal agreement to maintain the lights was debated and voted on by Ilkley Parish Council.

Cllr Jennifer Soutar, who has taken on the role of project manager for the town centre's Jubilee and Christmas lights, has found it would cost £4,000 to remove and reinstall replacement illuminations in the bushes in Mill Ghyll every time Bradford Council wanted to prune them.

A contractor is now looking at alternative illuminations for Mill Ghyll, including possible floodlighting, as well as antique street lights that Harrogate Borough Council is about to dispose of.

Cllr Soutar said it may be possible to strip, repaint and install these in Ilkley.
