AN "IRRESPONSIBLE" dog owner has been fined for letting their pets foul on recreational land in Pool-in-Wharfedale.

The action was taken after a member of the public reported the woman for allowing two dogs to leave their mess in Pool Riverside Park, formerly known as the Recreation Ground.

Councillor Barry Anderson (Con, Adel and Wharfedale), who has been campaigning for the past year for a crackdown on dog fouling in the village, hailed the result.

He said: "I am very pleased this action has been taken against a resident, who allowed their dog to foul a public recreation area.

"It is extremely important that people can use these public, open spaces without fear of coming across dog foul.

"This sends a strong message out to all dog owners that action will be taken. It also shows that, where members of the public are prepared to make a statement and act as witnesses, it will pay dividends. I would urge all members of the public who see this behaviour to report it.

"Children and adults alike should be able to enjoy our public open areas with the peace of mind they are not going to have their enjoyment spoiled by irresponsible dog owners.

"The majority of owners who are law abiding have nothing to fear from this crackdown, as they are already doing everything they can to clean up after their dogs."

Cllr Anderson has been working with Leeds City Council’s environmental team on the issue, and to ensure there are enough warning signs and dog waste bins in the area.

He added: "I have been working closely with the city council and Pool Parish Council to ensure there are enough facilities for dog owners to dispose of waste correctly.

"There is absolutely no need for anyone not to clean up after their dogs."

Pool C of E Primary School appealed through its newsletter last November for dog owners to stop letting their animals foul its playing fields.

Owners caught letting their dogs foul face receiving either a £75 spot penalty or a maximum fine of £1,000 if they are prosecuted.
