WORLD champion triathletes the Brownlee Brothers returned to their former school for the renaming of its sports pavilion.

Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, who were students at Bradford Grammar School until 2006 and 2008, respectively, attended a ceremony to rename the pavilion in their honour.

The brothers, who won gold and bronze at the London 2012 Olympics, took part in a fun run alongside current and former pupils, before the unveiling of the Brownlee Pavilion.

Kevin Riley, headteacher at Bradford Grammar, said that the school was delighted to honour Alistair and Jonathan.

He said: “They represent everything which is good about Bradford Grammar School: excellence, determination and humility.

“Our motto is Hoc Age; which means ‘just do it’, and their legacy is the inspiration they provide to the next generation of Bradfordians.”

As well as naming the pavilion after the world champions, there is also be a mural dedicated to Alistair and Jonathan inside the building, showcasing the brothers’ achievements during their time at Bradford Grammar and throughout their professional careers.

Emile Cairess, a Year 13 pupil at the school, said he was excited about meeting the Brownlees.

He said: “It is an honour to be able to meet athletes who are at the top of their game.

“It is especially exciting for me as I am heavily involved in Cross Country, and it is inspirational to know that we have attended the same school and I could follow in their footsteps.”

Emile was the British Athletics Challenge Series under-17s Boys winner in 2014/15.

The fun run in Lister Park, saw both current and former students, as well as governors, staff and guests take part alongside the Brownlee Brothers.

Alistair Brownlee won gold in the triathlon at London 2012 and at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, and was world champion in 2009 and 2011.

Younger brother Jonathan claimed bronze in London and silver in Glasgow and was world champion in 2012.
