CONTROVERSIAL traffic calming measures could be extended further across a moorland road in a bid to cut down on speeding motorists.

Many Wharfedale drivers protested when speed bumps were installed along Moor Road at Burley Woodhead more than a decade ago.

But Bradford Council has now revealed plans to put in additional bumps along the much-used country road, this time between Burley Woodhead and Menston.

The move is already attracting criticism from Wharfedale residents, but Bradford Council says action needs to be taken as many drivers are currently breaking the 20mph speed limit on the road.

Burley Woodhead resident, Chris Green, said: "The last lot have ruined my life. A lot of people are unhappy about them, there's just no need for them."

Councillor Val Slater, Bradford Council's executive member for housing, planning and transport, says consultation has already taken place with ward councillors and the emergency services, and objections will be considered.

She added: "The section of Moor Road between Menston and Burley currently has a 20mph speed limit. Surveys have shown that, unfortunately, many drivers do not stick to this speed limit. Consultation took place with local ward members, the parish council and emergency services.

"Shipley Area Committee has allocated funding for traffic calming measures, which would include round-top road humps on this stretch of road. Residents whose properties are directly affected have been informed and any formal objections will be looked at. Any objections that can’t be resolved will be considered by the area committee.

Ward councillor, Gerry Barker (Con, Wharfedale), welcomed moves to improve road safety, but said time would tell if the speed bumps will work

He added: "If it's improving safety for the public it's got to be welcomed.

"I take it on board there are some who are opposed to it, but I know several people have been requesting extra safety measures due to the speed of some of the traffic that goes along there. But we have to wait and see whether they are improvements or not."

Drivers attacked the installation of the previous set of speed bumps, which lie along the road between Burley Woodhead and Ilkley. Objectors at the time claimed they were unacceptable for disabled people, drivers and passengers suffering from arthritis, as well as farmers transporting livestock.
