THE FRIENDS of Ilkley Moor have been busy helping people learn more about the natural landscape and archaeological remains through their series of walks on the landmark moor.

Project officer, Tracy Gray, led a walk on August 8 to discover the flowers, grasses and trees of Ilkley Moor.

The second event ‘Water, Tracks and Trails’, on August 9, was a family event to give people the opportunity to discover the water tarns, springs and streams of Ilkley Moor; and which plants, insects and animals use these.

Animal tracking and pond dipping were part of this event. As well as exploring the upper tarn, the lower tarn and the streams the group were shown the natural spring behind White Wells cottage, the famous plunge pool and learnt about the history of Ilkley Moor as a spa town.

The third event ‘Archaeology Trail’, led by Colin Beecham of The Friends, was a tougher walk, held on August 16.

Starting from the Cow and Calf Rocks, the walk visited the cup and ring marked rocks Haystack, Pancake and the Idol stones and then calling at Backstone Beck Enclosure.

The events programme and heritage walks can be downloaded from the FOIM website ilkleymoor.org or collected from Ilkley Visitor Information Centre and shops in the town.
