A WHARFEDALE fundraising group will hold a coffee morning on Friday, July 31 to celebrate Yorkshire Day.

The event, organised by Yorkshire Cancer Research’s Wharfedale Committee, will take place at Guiseley Cricket Club, Nethermoor Park, Otley Road, Guiseley, from 10am to 12 noon.

There will be lots of stalls selling everything from cakes to books and bric-a-brac. A tombola and raffle will also be held.

The committee, which celebrates its 45th anniversary next year, has raised £204,649 for Yorkshire Cancer Research since it was formed. A further £107,296 has been left in the wills of people living in the Wharfedale area, bringing the total raised to a magnificent £311,945.

Yorkshire Cancer Research helps the people of Yorkshire avoid, survive and cope with cancer by funding world-class research. The charity, which was founded in 1925, aims to work in partnership with other organisations to improve cancer outcomes in Yorkshire, where people are more likely to get cancer, and more likely to die from it, than most other counties in England.

Some members of the committee recently supported Yorkshire Cancer Research at the 2nd Investec Test Match at Headingley Cricket Ground as part of the charity’s two year partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club, which aims to raise awareness of skin cancer and the dangers of being out in the sun too long.

The committee also recently held its annual general meeting, where retiring Chairman Pamela Laurie was thanked for all her hard work over the years.

Chairman Ros Carthy said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone at our special coffee morning later this month. We’re also busy preparing for our big lunch event which takes place annually at Otley Golf Club in October and will feature an interesting after lunch speaker.”

Tickets for the coffee morning, costing £2.50 including coffee and cookies, are available from any committee member or by calling 01943 862770.
