BEN Rhydding surveyor Robert Ormrod will be trying to cycle the equivalent height of Everest on Saturday, June 27 for charity.

Robert will attempt to climb the 8,848m (29,029 ft) on his bike in one day to raise funds for the charity DEBRA, which supports his friend's son.

Three-year-old Mason Crossley, from County Durham was diagnosed with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) when he was four months old. EB is a group of genetic skin conditions which causes the skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. In its most severe form EB is fatal.

Robert, who works with Mason's dad, Miles Crossley said: "I first became aware of Mason's condition when his parents were travelling regularly to see specialists in Birmingham to try and diagnose his condition.

"After about three months when the results came back as EB his family were told any knock could tear Mason's skin and eating could blister his throat."

There is currently no known cure for EB and DEBRA is focused on funding research to change this, whilst supporting people living with EB.

Any funds raised by Robert will go towards helping with this and if you would like further details or to donate visit Robert's Just Giving Page: justgiving.com/r-ormrod

The challenge will be taking place on the climb between Barden and Embsay, known locally as Black Park or Halton Heights. As Robert will only climb 140m on each ascent, it will have to be completed over 60 times, clocking up over 100 miles.

Robert, a regular cyclist with Ilkley Cycling Club, added: "Although I'm a frequent cyclist, climbing 8,848m is not something I've ever done before.

"It's going to be a real challenge physically and mentally. Constantly climbing and descending, I'm going to be on the bike for around 14 hours. Knowing I'm raising money for Mason though is a real inspiration."

If anyone would like to join Robert for a few ascents they are welcome to attend on the day. The climb will be marked and Robert is likely to be cycling from 6.30am until around 8pm on June 27.
