A WEETON man has been named the British Heart Foundation's Fundraising Volunteer of the Year.

James Stewart, who heads the charity's Harrogate fundraising branch, has helped raise more than £250,000 through his network for the Heart Research Centre, in Leeds.

The BHF singled out Mr Stewart for his "relentless determination in the fight against heart disease", and for introducing a variety of new fundraising projects.

The award was made during Volunteers' Week, an annual celebration off the life-changing work done by volunteers across the UK

Mr Stewart said: "I am delighted to have been given such a special award as there are so many worthy volunteers who give their time to the BHF.

“I have met some amazing people and have lovely memories fundraising for the charity.

"The BHF are so supportive and there are so many different ways you can get involved.

"I would encourage anyone to volunteer for them as it is such a rewarding experience and you get to meet the most fantastic and inspiring people."

The BHF says that the "incredible" number of hours James has put in to the fight against heart disease is helping to fund research projects into how to better understand, diagnose, prevent, treat and cure the condition.

Fundraising volunteer Manager for Weeton, Fiona Turner, said: “I am delighted that we can recognise James’ commitment to the BHF.

"He is always at the forefront of all events and seems to effortlessly juggle numerous tasks at one time to help bring in as much money as possible.

"I would love for other people in Weeton and the surrounding area to join our fight for every heartbeat in the UK.

"Every pound raised, every minute of your time, and every donation to our shops will help make a difference to people’s lives.

"There is no better time to find out how volunteering your time can make a difference, so please get in touch today."

Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer and often strikes suddenly, without warning.

The BHF currently provides funding for about 500 post-doctoral scientists to conduct research work across the UK.
