The Prime Minister has appointed Keighley and Ilkley Conservative MP Kris Hopkins to a senior position in the Government Whips Office in the ministerial shuffle.

Mr Hopkins, who retained his seat in last week’s General Election with an increased majority, has been made Vice-Chamberlain of the Household, an ancient title which dates back to 1501.

In addition of a range of duties relating to the organisation of parliamentary business, he will have personal responsibility for writing a daily private report to the Queen on proceedings in the House of Commons.

As an officer of the Royal Household, the Keighley and Ilkley MP will also accompany Her Majesty at a number of diplomatic and social events.

Mr Hopkins, who was previously Minister for Local Government, said: “I was honoured when David Cameron invited me to fill this very special role.

“Some of the ceremonial duties will take a bit of getting used to. For example, in two weeks, I’m due to be ‘taken hostage’ in Buckingham Palace to ensure the safe return of the Queen after she delivers her annual speech at the State Opening of Parliament.

“However, the ‘day job’ will involve significant responsibility for getting Government business through the House of Commons as we seek to implement the Conservative manifesto in full.

“Winning a majority at the General Election was a significant achievement. But it is a narrow majority and the new Conservative Government is committed to working hard to make the changes we need to keep our economy growing, create more jobs, improve our schools, protect our NHS, upgrade our transport network and building the Northern Powerhouse.

“I’m excited to be tasked with playing a key part in delivering these initiatives on behalf of the people of Keighley and Ilkley, who will always come first, and the country as a whole.”
