SCHOOLCHILDREN in Otley have been exploring the world of radio.

Members of Otley Amateur Radio Society (OARS) visited Ashfield Primary to show the pupils the technology in action. Kevin Gallagher spoke about how radio waves work, their historic use, and their continuing role in mobile communications, including phones.

Children from years three, four and five also got a chance to translate and send their name in Morse code, and to listen in when radio contact was made with an OARS member on Baildon Moor.

Year three teaching assistant Michael Ross, who organised the visit, said: “The children loved it.”

OARS will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.
