RESIDENTS in Otley are being asked to comment on plans to put up a protective fence around a junior football club’s grounds.

Cars churned up Weston Lane Juniors Sports and Social Club’s entire training area in March, leaving deep ruts in the waterlogged grass.

The vandalism was reminiscent of a similar incident that took place at the Weston Drive site four years ago, when the actual playing pitch was targeted.

This time moves are afoot to prevent further damage to the training area if local residents agree with the proposal.

Talk of erecting a barrier around the land has been going on for years, but landowners Leeds City Council promised, following the most recent damage, to pursue the idea.

The authority has now – after speaking to the sports and social club and West Yorkshire Police – sent letters to local residents asking if they would support the installation of a perimeter fence to “prevent vandalism and increase security”.

If supported, the anti-vehicle barrier would be made of concrete posts with steel beams and be about 3ft high.
