A SEWAGE works will be a focal point in the first of a series of walks organised by Aireborough Civic Society this year.

The spring and summer evening walks start on Friday, April 10 and continue fortnightly until the end of August.

‘Two pubs and a sewage works’ will set off from Apperley Road, opposite Parkin Lane, Apperley Bridge at 6pm.

Walk leader Bill Mason can be contacted on 01943 872 714. Clive Woods, from the civic society, said: “Walking is a great way to keep healthy, and this is also a great opportunity to get to know some of the most attractive parts of our area.

“Just turn up at the starting point for any of the walks or telephone the walk organiser for more information.

“New faces are especially welcome.”

He added: “The Friday evening walks were started in 1993 by the late Albert Shutt, then chairman of the Aireborough Civic Society.

“His plan was to explore the Aireborough area, visiting places even local residents hadn’t been to.”

Walks are normally between three and four miles in length and the pace is as fast as the slowest walker.

Mr Woods said: “As the walks cover a variety of terrain, sturdy footwear is strongly advised, along with weatherproof clothing. Most of the walks involve gradients, hills and stiles.

“This year we cover Apperley Bridge, Menston, Esholt, Pudsey, Roundhay, Fewston, the Chevin, The Parks of Yeadon and Hunger Hills, Rawdon. All are welcome.”

Walks coming up include: Friday, April 24 at 6pm, meet at Rawdon Meadows, Apperley Bridge; Friday, May 8 at 6.15pm, meet at Kirklands, Menston and Friday, May 22 at 6.30pm, meet by Pebbles Nursery, Nunroyd Park, Yeadon for a walk around Esholt Woods and Village Visit aireboroughcivicsociety.org.uk/ for further details about the society – which was formed for public benefit.

Everyone is also welcome at its meetings on the last Thursday of the month.

The meetings take place at 7.30pm in Rawdon Community Library.
