THE organisers of Otley Carnival are celebrating after being told they will receive police assistance this year after all.

West Yorkshire Police have been supporting the annual fundraising event for years by managing the rolling road closure that is needed to allow the parade to take place. But organisers were worried that assistance might end this year. Ward councillors had also raised concerns after the force warned that “in these times of austerity” its support for some community events could be compromised.

Otley Carnival, however, has now been given an assurance that officers will once again be out helping this year.

Committee treasurer Ann Steval said: “We have just been officially informed that the police will be covering the 2015 carnival as usual. This is great news, a great relief, and a testament to all those who contributed letters and emails to the campaign to reverse the original decision.

“We would like everyone to know how very grateful we are for all the support we have received from individuals, businesses and organisations who contacted the police on our behalf. Many thanks to all those who supported the carnival and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday, June 20.”

Otley and Yeadon’s three ward councillors had written to the force about the issue, pointing out that the added costs of paying for private traffic management could have a disastrous effect on events like Yeadon, Otley and Guiseley Carnivals and Horsforth Gala.

Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) said: “This is great news for all concerned. I’m glad common sense has prevailed and the police are able to support this important community event.

“Although we have still not received a reply to our letter to the police commissioner about this, I hope this decision will also apply to all local events.”

MP Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) added: “I am very pleased to that the police have made this commitment to support this year’s Otley Carnival.

“The previous announcement from the Police was clearly very concerning for the carnival organisers, and the people of Otley who look forward to this fantastic annual event.

“I hope that this will now allow Otley Carnival and other events across West Yorkshire to continue with the support of West Yorkshire Police.”

l A story about the new Otley Carnival Queen in last week’s newspaper mistakenly said this year’s carnival was on June 10. The Wharfedale & Aireborough Observer is happy to make the correction.
