ATTEMPTS are being made to return an old family Bible to descendants of the man who owned it.

Maureen Green found the Bible, which had belonged to Albert Cole, in the loft of a house she moved into in Harrogate.

Albert, who was born in Leeds in 1892 and was married in 1915, had links with Yeadon.

Mrs Cole has tried unsuccessfully to track down family members and now she is hoping readers of the Wharfedale Observer may be able to help.

She said: “When I moved into a house in Harrogate many years ago I found an old Bible in the loft and since then I have tried to find a home for it.”

She added: “My husband and I moved into a house in Harrogate in November 1961, we were the second residents in the house, the previous young family had emigrated to either New Zealand or Australia and very much later we found this old Bible in the roof space.”

Since the discovery she has tried to trace relatives of Mr Cole but has drawn a blank.

She said: “As we are currently downsizing and I didn’t want to just throw it away so sometime last year I spent a couple of Saturday afternoons phoning people with the surname Cole in the Leeds and Yeadon area to see if they had any connections with this family. No results.”

Albert’s father Ben was born in 1870 and his mother Ellen was born in 1866.The couple married at St. Simon’s Church Ventnor Street Kirkstall Road Leeds.

They had four other children, Annie Eliza, William, Arthur and Alice.
