OTLEY and Yeadon residents are being urged to respond to a consultation about switching off their street lights.

Leeds City Council is introducing a partial lights out night-time policy for low risk areas across the city in a bid to save money.

Householders in parts of Yeadon and Otley received letters this week telling them that a light within 50 metres of their home is set to be switched off between midnight and 5am from January 12, 2015.

Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) is asking all affected residents to make their feelings about the proposed changes known to the authority.

He said: “I am urging all residents to respond to the consultation over the decision to switch off street lights. While I appreciate that this will save energy, I understand that many residents may feel concerned.

“I have also asked that maps of the affected lights be displayed in the local library as the details on the council website are difficult to access. I will also be asking that the consultation period be extended because, over Christmas, things tend to get overlooked and the council offices are closed.”
