A POPPY from the iconic display at the Tower of London has been presented to Guiseley Royal British Legion by Guiseley Brass Band.

It was presented by bandmaster Roy W Stevenson to Elsie Turner in recognition Mrs Turner’s 31 years as standard bearer for the British Legion.

A band spokesman said: “Guiseley Brass Band has had a close relationship with Guiseley Royal British Legion for manyyears. They have played at remembrance parades, concerts and carnivals. More recently The band has been responsible for the Last Post – played by Roy W Stevenson for 64 years, by Noel Harrison for 44 years and by Denis Fowles for 40 years. This year The band was also involved in the commemoration of the start of the First World War at Guiseley Cross in August.”

The poppies were sold with the aim of raising more than £15 million for a number of service charities - The Royal British Legion, Confederation of Service Charities (COBSEO), Combat Stress, Coming Home, Help for Heroes and SSAFA (formerly the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association).
