A SPEED Indicator Device (SID) has caught high percentages of drivers breaking speed limits in Addingham.

The device recorded two-thirds of motorists exceeding the speed limit by Addingham Primary School on Bolton Road in one survey, while another session on Main Street found almost three-quarters of passing motorists chose to ignore the speed limit.

Jonathan White of Ilkley and District Road Safety Committee gave an update on the operations carried out with the indicator device in Addingham.

It was recently set up for 11 hours on Silsden Road, where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour, and recorded an average speed of 39mph. Of 1,440 vehicles which passed, 15 were travelling in excess of 40mph.

He said it was difficult to argue that current traffic calming measures in Addingham, such as flashing warning signs and other road signage, were working for the community, despite the efforts of elected as well as voluntary bodies.
