A SERVICE to commemorate the centenary of the First World War will take place on Monday at 2.30 pm in Ilkley at the Cenotaph in the Memorial Gardens (end of The Grove).
The Service will be led by Fr Philip Gray from St Margaret’s Church and prayers will be led by Rev Patrick Bateman from All Saint’s Parish Church.
The Chairman of Ilkley Parish Council, Coun Andrew Walbank, will welcome those attending and Coun Heathcliffe Bowen will read ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae.
Coun Bowen said: "The service will be an opportunity for the Parish Council and the town not only to mark the centenary of Great Britain’s declaration of war on Germany in 1914, but also to recognise the sacrifice of the many local men who went off to fight for King and Country in the Great War.
"We owe all of them a great debt and pay particular tribute to those who laid down their lives in the cause of freedom, and whose names are recorded on our Cenotaph.
"All residents and visitors will be most welcome to attend this short Service of commemoration."
