A young climber had to be airlifted to hospital after suffering a serious fall on Otley Chevin last weekend.

The 24 year old man suffered suspected spinal injuries after dropping between 10 and 12 metres whilst abseiling at the beauty spot on Sunday [JUL 27] afternoon.

Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team attended the scene, at the foot of a crag, along with Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics and members of the Hazardous Response Team.

They helped to treat the climber and secure him on a stretcher in preparation for evacuation - with an airlift agreed upon as the safest and quickest method.

Accompanied by one of the paramedics, he was pulled up with a winch man by an RAF Sea King Rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield, and taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.
