Children in Africa have sent the village of Burley-in-Wharfedale a stunning collection of delicate model cycles to be displayed during next month's Le Grand Depart.
Burley-in-Wharfedale has been linked with Terili in Mali for over 14 years through the 'On the Line' project. When children of Bamako, the capital of Mali, heard that the Tour de France was coming to the village they sent eight models of cycles that they had made themselves.
The models will be on display on Saturday, July 5 in Burley-in-Wharfedale Methodist Church.
Wharfedale Councillor Jackie Whiteley said: "A truly wonderful gift has arrived for us. The skill and accuracy of these working models is amazing given the materials available to them.
"I hope as many people as possible will visit the exhibition to see these miniature bicycles."
Coun Whiteley said preparations were well under way to make it a great day for the village and for the thousands of visitors expected.
"We are known for our imaginative Scarecrow Trail during our yearly Burley in Wharfedale Festival, and there will be some amusing sights on July 5," she added. "To this end we are asking you to donate any old cycles that you have finished with so that we can use them to decorate the village.
"We also need volunteers to help for part of the day to direct the many visitors who will arrive by train. If you have an unwanted bike or can help on the day please contact the Parish Clerk on 07971 772181, or 01943 864728."
