Open air pool Ilkley Lido will open for the summer season on Saturday with a day of fun family activities.

The Denton Road pool will officially open this weekend, and a special opening event is set to feature face painting and a chance to have a go on a climbing wall.

The event will run from 10am to 5pm and tickets for the day will be £2.

The Bradford Council-run venue, voted by the Guardian as one of the top ten open air pools in the country, will be open until Sunday, September 7, with extended opening hours during the school summer holidays.

Bradford Council's Assistant Director Sport and Leisure, Phil Barker, said:”We are very proud of and continue to invest in the lido, which attracts more than 140,000 people each year.

“We are hoping that this year, with lots more activities and events happening at the pool and the Tour de France Grand Depart taking place in the district, we will have another great summer season.”

The lagoon-shaped lido has a 20-metre stretch of shallow water that children can splash in while adult swimmers can spend their time completing lengths at the other end of the pool.

Chairman of Friends of Ilkley Lido (FOIL), Louise Hale, said: “We have been working hard with Bradford Council to make this season at the Lido one of the best.

“The Council has made further investments in the facilities including new picnic tables and resurfacing of the grounds and with funding support from Ilkley Parish Council, we have worked with staff at the pool to restore the Lido benches.

“We are looking forward to the opening event where we will have a stand so people can find out more about the Friends Group.

“We would love anyone who has any old photos of the Lido to bring these along to share with us.”

Ilkley Lido is open 12 noon to 7.30pm during the weekdays, and 10am to 5.30pm on weekends. During the summer school holidays, the lido will be open 10.30am to 7.30pm daily.
