The Tour de France Grand Depart winner’s trophy was in the Kings Hall, Ilkley last Thursday and two members of Ilkley Grammar School’s Cycling Club, Freya Bishop and Jack Hamilton-Croft, got to see it.

The official trophy, awarded to the city or area which hosts the opening stage of the tour, was first presented last year to the island of Corsica when it hosted the Grand Depart of the centenary tour.

“Yorkshire will be the second name to feature on this great tour symbol, which was commissioned by Tour de France organisers, the Amaury Sport Organisation, and was designed by the award-winning French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

PE teacher Matthew Carr took the students down to the Kings Hall.

“It was too good a chance to see the trophy to be missed,” he said.

“Hopefully it was inspirational for the students and will spur them on next time they are out training.”
