A fundraising mum from Otley has had the name and logo of her favourite charity tattooed on her arms.

Mel Metcalfe didn’t pick just any date to have the symbols for Bliss indelibly marked on her – but deliberately chose Mother’s Day to maximise the publicity.

Mel, 35, has needed the help and support of the premature and sick baby charity and experienced at first hand how vital it is.

She explains: “I got the logo tattooed on Mother’s Day for Bliss, for babies born too soon, too small, too sick, because they are amazing.

“I’m doing this to hopefully raise some money for Bliss and help get word out about their fantastic work.

“We are lucky enough to have three beautiful girls but over the years have miscarried six single pregnancies, three sets of twins and had a beautiful son, Elliot, born sleeping.

“Our girls – Stacey Rose, 13, Bethany Mae, 11, and two-year-old Alice – were all born premature and with health problems.

“All our children are beautiful, happy girls and we are so lucky to have them. The help Bliss gives to families with sick and premature babies is invaluable and if we can do anything to help and support them we will.”

The tattooing is only the latest in a series of fundraisers Mel, 35, has undertaken for the charity.

Previous ventures have included organising a sponsored bungee jump and, last December, covering her family home with thousands of Christmas lights and decorations.

For the past two years she has also driven the Leeds Children’s Hospital Christmas Gift Appeal, which has delivered hundreds of presents to children who had to spend the festive period in hospital.
