Thirty-five children from Ghyll Royd School in Burley-in-Wharfedale did their extra mile for Sports Relief last Friday during their early-morning running club.

Many then went on to take part in the Ghyll Royd Sport Relief Cycle Challenge.

Throughout the day children, staff and parents cycled 522 miles, surpassing their target and raising over £250 for Sport Relief.

Their original aim was to cycle from the school to Land's End, a total of 420 miles in a school day.

The Cycle Challenge was organised by Mr David Baxter and took part in school on four static bikes. The children also came to school dressed in their favourite sports kit for the event.

Jo Jenkinson, head teacher, said: “The children were inspired last week by the sight of Harry Gration as he passed the school on his tandem tour and are already excited about the Tour de Yorkshire, therefore a cycle challenge seemed a wonderful idea. I am thrilled that they reached their target and managed to cycle a further 100 miles especially after having already run a mile. Well done everyone, a great achievement.”
