Students slam staff in sports challenge

Ilkley Grammar School staff and students alike were busy raising money last week for Sport Relief.

Students paid a fee to dress in sport-themed non-uniform on Friday and bought tickets to watch their teachers take on the much younger and fitter post-16 basketball team.

There was an added incentive for high ticket sales by key stage leader, Tim Milburn.

He challenged the students to raise at least £200 and he would then take part in the match wearing a tutu and if they could raise more than £500 he would wax his rather hairy legs. The students rose magnificently to the challenge and raised a staggering £2,319.64 – trumping last year’s £1,518 raised for Comic Relief.

The match itself was tense but even with PE staff members on the teachers’ team it was all one-way traffic. The post-16 team showboated their way to a 48-16 win.

Head teacher Mrs Gillian James said: “It never ceases to amaze me just how generous our students, staff and parents can be. Thank you so much.”

Mr Milburn, who is also running in this year’s London Marathon for the charity Get Kids Going, said: “I’m not sure which has been more painful, the months of training in wintry conditions or having my legs waxed!

“Both, however, will have been worth it once I cross the finishing line in London and I have completed my first marathon, whilst raising lots of money for my chosen charity.

“Get Kids Going is a national charity which gives disabled children and young people, up to the age of 26, the wonderful opportunity of participating in sport. You can follow my final weeks of training at uk.virginmoneygiving. com/TimMilburn and on Twitter @GetTimGoing.”
