A month-long fundraising campaign by a Horsforth schoolgirl will culminate in a day of events in Millennium Square.

The Celebration of Yorkshire will take place in the centre of Leeds to raise money for children with chronic, terminal or life-threatening illnesses across the county.

The free event, on May 31, will be the culmination of a month-long May’ke fundraising campaign organised by 14-year-old Bethany Hare, in aid of her charity Bethany’s Smile.

The schoolgirl, whose awards include Just Giving’s Young Fundraiser of the Year, Diana Princess of Wales Champion Fundraiser and Rotary of Great Britain and Ireland National Young Citizen, is inviting all of Yorkshire to come together and use the month of May to fundraise and ‘May’ke A Difference’.

As part of the campaign she is also organising May’ke – The Voice Of Yorkshire, a singing contest to find the best voice in the county. She is inviting Yorkshire companies and organisations to hold in-house competitions to find the individual with the most amazing voice.

The Millennium Square event will include Yorkshire bands and dance groups, as well as Yorkshire tapas, locally brewed beer and Yorkshire ice cream. It will also include May’ke Fundraising Awards and the Voice of Yorkshire final.

The aim of the month of fundraising is to help Bethany’s Smile raise its target of £300,000 for a purpose-built Smile Cottage – a holiday respite home in Yorkshire, where families can spend quality time and build happy memories when they are faced with the news that their child has a very short life expectancy.

The charity Bethany’s Smile began in 2010 when the schoolgirl made a short video to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice.

To date she has raised more than £50,000 for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Visit mayke.org for further details.
