Police are warning Ilkley residents to review the security of their garages after a “spike” in break-ins across the town.

Burglars stole power tools and bicycles last month, in a total of 16 break-ins at sheds, garages and commercial premises in the area.

There were also three house burglaries in February, according to new crime figures.

Sergeant Julie Gray, of Wharfedale and Craven Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), said the burglaries have primarily been of garages, and she asked residents to look more closely at security.

She said: “We urge anybody who has a garage or shed to review their security. If anyone wants police to have a look at it, we’re more than happy to do that.”

Sgt Gray said there was a similar rise in this type of burglary in April last year and police mounted extra patrols in December to combat a rise in the number of house burglaries in Ilkley.

Two of the 16 break-ins last month were at Booths Supermarket on Leeds Road.

The month also saw three thefts from cars in Ilkley, in which mobile phones and a car stereo were stolen. There were three reports of criminal damage and one assault.
