A £5 million price tag has been put on Otley’s proposed new multi-purpose sports centre.

As reported recently in this newspaper the steering committee behind the Chevin Olympic Park are busy drawing up a business plan.

The ambitious, Olympic legacy scheme aims to create first class facilities for local cyclists, athletes and other sports enthusiasts including football, rugby and hockey players.

The £5 million estimated cost was revealed at the latest meeting of the area’s steering committee, and had been calculated by the same local architects who have drafted an initial site layout for the project.

The facilities that sum would provide would include: l A two-storey clubhouse l A 400-metre athletics track, an outdoor cycle route, and an athletics throwing area l A full size artificial football and rugby pitch and hockey pitch, and floodlighting.

Steering committee chairman Tony Walker, of Otley Athletic Club, said: “The £5 million estimate is a cumulative figure of all the individual components within the scheme, and is very much in line with our own initial thoughts.

“We are well on our way with the business plan and we hope that funding will be in place by the time the Tour de France arrives in Otley next July.”

The preferred site for the park, which was given a successful preliminary inspection by Leeds City Council, is still to be announced.
