As The Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey launches its new afternoon tea there is the chance for one lucky reader to join the restaurant’s head chef Adam Smith in his kitchen to see how the full afternoon tea is prepared and presented, learning tips of the trade along the way, before sitting down to enjoy the delicious treat with a chosen guest.

Adam Smith, widely regarded as one of the country’s leading young chefs, trained at the Ritz, which is justly famous for serving the most elegant afternoon tea.

Twenty five-year-old Adam was named the top Roux Scholar and Observer Young Chef of the Year in 2012. His version of afternoon tea brings to The Devonshire Arms the quality of the Ritz with his own recipes and presentation.

Scrumptious freshly baked scones with jam and Yorkshire clotted cream, exquisite sandwiches and indulgent cakes are all beautifully served with a choice of teas including Yorkshire, of course, infusions, coffee, mulled wine or prosecco (usual price £56 for two).

Managing director of Devonshire Hotels and Restaurants, Simon Rhatigan said: “Afternoon tea at The Devonshire Arms gives you the opportunity to sit in the warm and sumptuous setting of a lovely country estate hotel whilst enjoying a tradition that was first brought into fashion by Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, a great friend of Queen Victoria.

“The Duchess reproduced a ritual that was already taking place on the continent to fill the space between luncheon and supper. Others soon followed her example and a British tradition was born – one that is celebrated at The Devonshire Arms, Bolton Abbey.”
