A police response officer, formerly married to footballer Dean Windass, was ordered to pay £245 by Skipton magistrates for speeding on the A59 at Beamsley Hill.

Helen Windass, 48, was recorded doing 57mph in the 50mph limit in her Audi A1 on June 1, the court heard on Friday.

Windass, who admitted speeding by letter to court, had been eligible for a speed awareness course because she was only just over the limit, but had failed to take it up, despite being sent a reminder.

In her letter to court, Windass said she worked for North Yorkshire Police as a response officer and had a clean licence for 20 years until last year when she had received three points for speeding. She said she had been trying to get her life back on track following a bad divorce and as a single parent.

Magistrates fined Windass, of St John’s Park, Menston, £140 and endorsed her licence with three penalty points.

She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £20 victims surcharge.
