A TV celebrity is helping a Guiseley mum to raise thousands of pounds for charities which help seriously ill children.

Former Coronation Street actress Wendi Peters is supporting an attempt by Sarah Bishop to raise funds for the The Cardiomyopathy association and Great Ormond Street children’s hospital.

Sarah began raising money after her son Marty was born with a rare heart condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Before Marty was even born Sarah and her husband Darren were warned that he might not survive. But now, aged three and a half, he is doing well, under the care of Great Ormond Street.

Now Sarah has set up Marty’s Penny Bank – www.martyspennybank.co.uk – to raise funds and awareness for the two charities which supported her family.

She is organising two big fundraising projects and has the support of TV star Wendi, who reached the Celebrity Masterchef final in 2009.

She said: “Wendi read Marty’s story and is also a friend of a close friend, so she decided to help and we developed the W M Cake Challenge. Wendi supplied me with two recipes, and I am now selling these recipes for a minimum donation of £2.

“There are prizes to be had including meeting Wendi and tickets to the Cake and Bake Show in Manchester next April.”

Sarah is hoping to raise £1,000 with the cake challenge and a further £3,000 with a performance at the Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds next April.

The show will feature around 50 children from Little Cherries, a children’s drama and musical theatre club run by Sarah.

She is being supported by local West End performer and TV actor Phil Cole and his fiancee, singer Jude Hill.
