YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION: The July meeting of the Hawksworth branch was held on Monday evening. Members had arrived in good spirits with the current weather being so nice, but were saddened to hear from chairman Sheila Inglesent that the YCA president and joint founder Audrey Totty had died at the weekend. Mrs Totty will be fondly remembered at Hawksworth as she was living there when the association was formed and was a founding member of the branch and a honorary life member. The association is 30 years old this year and there are various special events planned. The speaker for the evening was David Williams MBE who spoke about the inspirational life of Leonard Cheshire and the work of Cheshire Homes for people with disabilities. Leonard Cheshire had a distinguished Second World War becoming the youngest squadron leader and flying 100 successful bombing raids. It was following the war that he set up the first Cheshire Home so he could help those coming back from the war less lucky than him, such as those with bad injuries and disabilities. There are now 80 residential homes and outreach projects in 55 countries. Mr Williams is a volunteer at Champion House Cheshire Home at Calverley so was able tell members about that home in detail. A vote of thanks was given by Sheila Jarvis. Tea hostesses were Audrey Murgatroyd and Anne Huby. The walking group will meet on the evening of Monday, July 22, for a walk around the local area. Next month’s meeting on August 12 will commence at 6pm as there will be a pearl anniversary afternoon tea before the speaker talks about the Bronte family.
