Singing star and actress Maureen Nolan is launching a UK-wide campaign to find people who are hard of hearing and have triumphed over adversity – and is bringing the search to Ilkley.

Maureen has teamed up with Specsavers hearing centre in Ilkley to urge local residents with hearing loss to enter the annual Sound Barrier Star Awards.

The awards are an initiative aimed at celebrating achievement in people who are deaf or hard of hearing and seeks to reward individuals for their courage and accomplishments.

Currently on tour with the hit musical Blood Brothers, Maureen suffers from high-frequency hearing loss and has recently been fitted with hearing aids in both ears.

Pete Rookes, store director from Specsavers hearing centre in Ilkley, said: “There are some brilliant stories of people with hearing loss and the Sound Barrier Star Awards gives a platform for these achievers to be recognised.”

For every entry, Specsavers will donate £5 to the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Visit the website at specsavers.co.uk/hearing/sound-barrier-star-awards/ to nominate someone.

The closing date for entries is August 12.
