The friends and family of a young woman who died from breast cancer are setting up a charity fund called ‘Nadia’s Wish’ in her memory.

Nadia Shaw was just 33 when she lost her courageous battle against breast cancer in January 2011. As well as being a qualified driving instructor and a nail technician, she worked behind the bar of The Crown Inn in Addingham for many years.

Now Maria Wells, landlady of The Crown Inn in Addingham, Nadia’s sister Galina Harrison and friend Becky Shaw have set up ‘Nadia’s Wish’.

The first fundraising event is a black tie event at The Crown Inn on Friday, May 3, featuring DJ Martin Roe, music from The Sequel Band, raffles and food. The trio are busy contacting local businesses asking for their support and donations of raffle prizes.

Becky, an events organiser, said: “The idea is that every year we will try and hold a charity event of some sort to raise money for a charity close to Nadia. This year a proportion of the money raised will go towards two causes.

“We would like to send Olivia Wilkinson, of Ilkley, aged four, who suffers from a life limiting heart condition and her family to Euro Disney to make Olivia’s dream come true and the second is Manorlands Hospice, Sue Ryder in memory of Nadia who died there.

We want to support their ongoing commitment to nursing the terminally-ill patients and helping their families.”

It is not the first time Nadia’s friends have raised money for charity in her name. Staff at The Crown Inn held a Day for Nadia after completing in Race for Life in Nadia’s name to raise money for breast cancer research.

Male members of staff from the pub have also joined in the fundraising in memory of Nadia by holding a sponsored walk on May bank holiday last year, followed by a barbecue, raising hundreds of pounds for charity.
